Where better to find Merino sheep than in the area surrounding the village of Merino (population 400), which was named for the famous breed? The Western District of Victoria is known for its high-quality pasture and wool. It's a flat volcanic plain with some of the best grazing land in Australia. Sheep have grazed here since the 1830s, with the founding of Merino Downs station.
